Excellent book overall.By Ethan MooreThis little book contains many insights both for performing and practicing intelligently; and is filled with musical examples from the standard literature. The explanation of rubato is straightforward and especially well-detailed (receiving an entire chapter); and by itself is worth much more than the price of the book.Matthay had pianists primarily in mind; but even if you donrsquo;t play that instrument; a lot of what he has to say will still apply to whatever form of music-making yoursquo;re engaged in; including composition and teaching. In other words just about any musician can benefit from this book -- it should never have been out-of-print!The only real shortcoming is that Matthay makes many verbose digressions; with a consequent lack of focus at times; but which may be accounted for in part by the fact that some or all of it is a transcription of a lecture(s); possibly informal. Thanks to Forgotten Books too -- this book deserves much better than the cheap presentation that company offers; but notwithstanding that problem; better some sort of print than none at all!0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
