Take it with you if you are going museum hoppingBy John AlldredgeEspecially if you are not especially well educated in art appreciation.Porter skips some of my personal favourite works and museums but introduced me to many more that I needed know about.His prose is non-technical but nonetheless enlightening. The book is good concise overview of Western art of the second millennium; formatted as a narrative of museum visits to view specific works. This is what Porter promises and what he delivers.By all means download the kindle sample but to get the most from 149 Paintings You Really Need To See; you should have the paper version because of the larger colour illustrations.Even then; you only get a hint of what the painting described actually looks like; enough to whet your appetite to go and see the real thing.I can see myself referring to this often and Im going to buy the print version after having borrowed it from my local public library.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The author does have nice color images; along with interesting commentary about the paintings he chose.
