Description

Around 1542; descendants of the Aztec rulers of Mexico created accounts of the pre-Hispanic history of the city of Tetzcoco; Mexico; one of the imperial capitals of the Aztec Empire. Painted in iconic script ("picture writing"); the Codex Xolotl; the Quinatzin Map; and the Tlohtzin Map appear to retain and emphasize both pre-Hispanic content and also pre-Hispanic form; despite being produced almost a generation after the Aztecs surrendered to Hernaacute;n Corteacute;s in 1521. Yet; as this pioneering study makes plain; the reality is far more complex.Eduardo de J. Douglas offers a detailed critical analysis and historical contextualization of the manuscripts to argue that colonial economic; political; and social concerns affected both the content of the three Tetzcocan pictorial histories and their archaizing pictorial form. As documents composed by indigenous people to assert their standing as legitimate heirs of the Aztec rulers as well as loyal subjects of the Spanish Crown and good Catholics; the Tetzcocan manuscripts qualify as subtle yet shrewd negotiations between indigenous and Spanish systems of signification and between indigenous and Spanish concepts of real property and political rights. By reading the Tetzcocan manuscripts as calculated responses to the changes and challenges posed by Spanish colonization and Christian evangelization; Douglass study significantly contributes to and expands upon the scholarship on central Mexican manuscript painting and recent critical investigations of art and political ideology in colonial Latin America.

Hurrells HollywoodBy Lilly FordThis is a truly exquisite book; its large;thick and the production values are top-notch.The book is the most comprehensive photographic account of Hurrells amazing portraits. It contains hundreds of large crisp clear b/w portraits many of them have never been published before along with a couple of color photos as well. The book is divided into chapters chronicling Hurrells career and style. The text gives the right amount of information; while leaving the beautiful photos to speak for themselves. This book is a must for all fans of Hollywoods lost glamour era and anyone appreciating beautiful photography.Mr.Vieira and Running Press did a marvelous job producing this magnificent tome.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. ClassBy C. ParkerWhen I read a Mark Vieira book; I always come to the same conclusion - its the best hes ever done. Then he turns around and writes yet another best ever; every time. And so it is with George Hurrells Hollywood: Glamour Portraits 1925-1992. Once I started reading; I simply couldnt stop - the text; the photographs; absolutely exquisite. Mark Vieira is one of my most favorite authors; and theres a reason for that - hes good at what he does. One of the best!2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ... time to sit back and digest these incredible photos like sitting down to enjoy an expensive meal instead of ...By RJI just received my book so Ive only done a cursory read through (looked at many of the photos) and realize I need to find the time to sit back and digest these incredible photos like sitting down to enjoy an expensive meal instead of rushing through like fast food. Hurrells style is unmistakable. The before and after photos really tell the story of how he made stars out of "STARS" by making them appear better than the best they could be. Definitely a must have photo book that will give the reader hours of enjoyment.....one only needs to reserve the time to slowly digest not only the beautiful photos but the written glimpses into old Hollywood.
