376 Decorative Allover Patterns from Historic Tilework and Textiles (Dover Pictorial Archive)

PDF 376 Decorative Allover Patterns from Historic Tilework and Textiles (Dover Pictorial Archive) by Charles Cahier; Arthur Martin in Arts-Photography

Description

The increased use of quality designs in 19th-century manufactured goods created a steady demand during that period for collections of decorative patterns. This volume reproduces one such collection ― an extremely rare and valuable portfolio of 376 motifs assembled more than a century ago by two French Jesuit scholars. Relying on historical wall and floor tiles; textile patterns; tapestries; wall hangings; and other designs originating in the Middle Ages; the Renaissance; and later European and Islamic cultures; Charles Cahier (1807ndash;1882) and Arthur Martin (1802ndash;1856) produced a work of true artistic distinction. Included are a wealth of splendid floral; animal; bird; and geometric patterns; carefully researched and meticulously redrawn for use in a myriad of graphic and artistic projects. Many of the motifs are accompanied by complementary border designs; an often essential accessory. This edition faithfully reproduces the edition published in 1868; titled Suite aux meacute;langes darcheacute;ologie. It represents an invaluable copyright-free resource embodying the finest designs from historic sources; ready for use by artists; illustrators; craftspeople; and designers working with textiles; wallpapers; interior decoration; and other projects.

Nice collection; with some seldom included beautiful balladsBy geezerdlyA very nice selection of ballads; some that arent included in any other of the too many collections Ive gathered over the years. Most of the arrangements that I suspect are by Brent Edstrom have a really unique touch to them. Sophisticated; but very playable by a pianist at the intermediate level and beyond. One caveat ndash; although Edstrom is listed as the arranger in the link; several of the songs are not arranged by Edstrom. A couple; Misty and Moon River; and one or two others; are in a collection I own arranged by Al Lerner; whos also a very skilled arranger; but I mildly object to the minor bit of subterfuge. Im taking a star away after further exploration of the contents. Fully 1/3 of the arrangements are from another Hal Leonard collection I already own. The description lead me to believe that all selections were arranged by Edstrom; and I really enjoy his arrrangements.24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. MagicalBy BishopI have played classical piano for many years; but have gotten into slow jazz ballads as they are fun to play at parties and you can be a little sloppy; in style and sobriety; and still sound good with this type of music. The jazz series books by Hal L. are great - chords can be beefy and exciting; yet very playable. I have been searching for this type of book for a long time - buy it; I dont think you will be disappointed.I also reviewed the Jazz for Lovers book in the series; also good - some great songs in there.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Perfect for late intermediate/early advanced pianistsBy SweetMusicPerfect for late intermediate/early advanced pianists. I took piano lessons from a Baptist preachers wife; so "improvisation" was not a skill I learned. Its nice to be able to play jazz and have it sound "jazzy" reading music sheet music; and not lead sheets. I bought a few other books in the series and they are all great.
