An American TreasureBy Carl BeanAn amazing inside look not only at the Staple Family but at the musical landscape of American Folk; Blues and Black Gospel music!! How the music of the 60s; and 70s crossed all categorical lines in the public arena!! A great read for all music lovers!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Read this book.By The Pie DudeThis is a fascinating book that tells the story of race in America through one familys eyes; and through popular music. The Staples family experienced slavery; Jim Crow; share cropping; the northern migration from Mississippi to Chicago; the civil rights movement and more. Their family band started in gospel and incorporated folk; blues; funk; soul and rock music into their mix. Kots use of interviews and archival materials; and his experience as a popular music critic; make for a very readable story. If you read just one book about music thus year; this should be it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Perfect...By James H. LynchI wanted another hundred pages! Another 20 albums!
