A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll; Redemption; and the Life of Leonard Cohen

DOC A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll; Redemption; and the Life of Leonard Cohen by Liel Leibovitz in Arts-Photography

Description

This book provides the first sustained critical exploration; and celebration; of the relationship between Geography and the contemporary Visual Arts. With the growth of research in the Geohumanities and the Spatial Humanities; there is an imperative to extend and deepen considerations of the form and import of geography-art relations. Such reflections are increasingly important as geography-art intersections come to encompass not only relationships built through interpretation; but also those built through shared practices; wherein geographers work as and with artists; curators and other creative practitioners. For Creative Geographies features seven diverse case studies of artistsrsquo; works and exhibitions made towards the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twentieth-first century. Organized into three analytic sections; the volume explores the role of art in the making of geographical knowledge; the growth of geographical perspectives as art world analytics; and shared explorations of the territory of the body; In doing so; Hawkins proposes an analytic framework for exploring questions of the geographical ldquo;workrdquo; art does; the value of geographical analytics in exploring the production and consumption of art; and the different forms of encounter that artworks develop; whether this be with their audiences; or their makers.

Appendices alone are worth the moneyBy careful readerIn addition to a serviceable translation of Platos Timaeus; this edition also contains a series of appendices concerning the musical; astronomical; and geometrical background to the dialogue. Much of the cosmology in the dialogue deals with perplexing numerical ratios and descriptions of geometrical solids constructed from various plane figures. The appendices provide short yet detailed explanations of the mathematical and other problems involved. If it is not already clear that the 9:8; 5:4; and other ratios explain Pythagorean problems in tuning string instruments; or if you just cant quite visualize or construct the various solids built of the different kinds of triangles; then buy this book for the appendices. Its worth it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mystery and poetryBy CustomerEssential for students of Western thought and the most mystical of topics! Only Plato could write it thus! With a gift for words; and stating the complex in peculiarly lay language.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Follows the GreekBy IABKalkavages translation closely follows the Greek text; Donald Zeyls translation is arguably more readable; but being easier to read; it follows the Greek less closely. The two translations and their notes are complementary.
