He is a talented photographer and an esteemed historian of our hometown. I have used his book; and his historical articles to help with some of my own novels. This book was special to me as my step-father was an L N conductor for many years. I remember many of the stories he used to tell about railroad lore. The pictures and stories that go with them are priceless and they hopefully will preserve a small piece of small town history.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great MemoriesBy CustomerThis is about the town that I grew up in so not everyone will enjoy it as much as I did. Great pictures and research on the beginnings of Etowah. There is even a picture of my mother that I had never seen before because all our family pictures were lost due to house fire before I was born.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Photographic HistoryBy John R. SharpDurant Tullock will never become rich and famous by virtue of having authored this book. But what he has earned is the gratitude of myself and others who grew up in Etowah and countless other little American towns whose history would be lost without people like him. Like a previous reviewer; I grew up in Etowah (and at the same time as the author); so its hard for me to be objective in discussing the book. But by any standards; its an amazing collections of photographs covering the entire history of the town; and it doesnt shy away from difficult subjects like segregation. It brought back powerful memories for me; as well filling in some details on the towns history that I was unfamiliar with. The books interest is not limited to those who grew up in the area - I live in Colorado now; and showing the book to friends who have never been to Tennessee has been the catalyst for many interesting discussions on childhood; history; civil rights; and other topics. Like most kids who grow up in these little Appalachian towns; I left as soon as I reach young adulthood; naively believing that life must be better somewhere else. Im glad there are people like Durant Tullock; who knew better; and are keeping these towns and their histories alive.
