BUY THIS.By WallA superlative resource for all scholars in the humanities (and especially literature). I was about to write "junior scholars;" (graduate students stand to benefit most from the book) but the wealth of information in this book can help even established scholars improve their writing. I concur with one earlier reviewer here who wishes they had read the book years ago when just starting out in graduate school.Currently studying literature in graduate school? BUY THIS. Not only does the book provide immediately useful; practical advice to anyone involved in literary scholarship; it also exemplifies good academic writing. It is a pleasure to read.If youre unsure of whether youll like the book; first find and read one or two of Eric Hayots articles for a taste of his writing. Then come back and buy this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is a must for writers in academiaBy ModernistCorgiI am completing my doctoral dissertation in literature and this book; when I started reading it; certainly helped me understand many of the challenges I have been facing in the process. This book; I believe; should be mandatory reading starting from senior year in high school. But if you are a grad student and feel that your writing could improve; do yourself a favor and buy this book. You will thank me and the author for doing so once you start seeing writing; and your own writing; under a very different light.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent; PracticalBy Sarah A. ChaunceyChapter 8 alone is worth the price of this book. It is a book that will be of value for all academic writers not only those who are writing in the humanities. The examples are humanities focused; but it is easy to extrapolate to social sciences.
