Adult Supervision (Oberon Modern Plays)

Description

Long before movie stars Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger became governors of California; a popular radio personality with no previous political experiencemdash;who wasnt even registered to votemdash;swept into the governors office of Texas. W. Lee "Pappy" ODaniel was a 1930s businessman who discovered the power of radio to sell flour. His musical shows with the Light Crust Doughboys (which launched the career of Bob Wills) and his radio homilies extolling family and Christian values found a vast; enthusiastic audience in Depression-era Texas. When Pappy decided to run for governor in 1938 as a way to sell more flourmdash;a fact he proudly proclaimed throughout the campaignmdash;the people of Texas voted for him in record numbers. And despite the ineptitude for politics he displayed once in office; Texans returned him to the governorship in 1940 and then elected him to the U.S. Senate in 1941 in a special election in which he defeated Lyndon Johnson; as well as to a full term as senator in 1942.While the hit film O Brother; Where Art Thou? celebrated a fictional "Please Pass the Biscuits; Pappy" ODaniel; this book captures the essence of the real man through photographs taken by employees of the Texas Department of Public Safety; most of which are previously unpublished. Reminiscent of the work of WPA photographers such as Russell Lee and Dorothea Lange; these photos record the last unscripted era of politics when a charismatic candidate could still address a crowd from an unpainted front porch or a mobile bandstand in the back of a truck. They strikingly confirm that Pappy ODaniels ability to connect with people was as great in person as on the radio. To set the photos in context; Bill Crawford has written an entertaining text that discusses the political landscape in Texas and the United States in the 1930s; as well as the rise of radio as mass medium for advertising and entertainment. He also provides extensive captions for each picture. John Anderson; Photo Archivist of the Texas State Archives; discusses the work of Joel Tisdale and the other DPS photographers who left this extraordinary record of the greatest vote-getter in Texas history; who became one of Americas first celebrities to cross the line from entertainment to political office.

WhiteThe braided hairstyles in this beautiful book really are stunning; as the title says. Author Monae Everett makes it easy to follow her step-by-step instructions with beautiful photos and clear directions. Not only is this an excellent book to have on hand for when you want to create a statement braid; but I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the book itself; the heavy pages; and beautiful photos; as well as photos of all of the tools youll need and even photos for prepping the hair for certain styles. I usually buy books in Kindle format; but having the paperback on hand lets me refer to the instructions more easily; and gives my model something to look at and choose from while shes waiting.Stunning Braids: Step-by-Step Guide to Gorgeous Statement Hairstyles0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful pictures and broken down in steps to do it yourself!By LeighBeautiful braids and how to create them step-by-step in the book. I really like the illustrations and how the braids are broken down for each step. I can do basic braiding; french and plating; but need more variety for summertime with longer; thick hair. It takes a while to practice on my own but extra mirrors help. Its worth it to learn a beautiful style that is flattering. I received several compliments for my first style and look forward to trying the rest. I have thick; coarse hair. Some styles are more suited for that and look "bohemian" but others are more suited for flat ironed or straight; shiny hair. I usually get a blow-out or "keratin treatment" a few times a year; making it easy for me to wear my hair either way. It will help so I am not limited in using this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great seller! Item as describedBy CustomerGreat seller! Item as described!
