You can learn about the entire process on how to build your own valve amplifiers; from wiring to metalworking; which tools to use; which valves; stages; etc..Im giving it 4 stars because the book features many pictures however they are all in black and white; which makes it difficult to fully appreciate all the details; the kindle version apparently has color pictures. In my opinion you will not learn how to design an amplifier but you will learn how to build them; which is the purpose of the book; however if you want to learn all the ins and outs of valve design; there are other books more suitable for the purpose like the other book by Mr. Jones Valve Amplifiers; Fourth Edition will seem more apropriate; or my personal favorite Radio Designers Handbook; Fourth Edition.0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. practical and very useful.By Sergio Domingues NunesComprehensive; practical and very useful.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. You will not learn how to build valve amps from this weird bookBy MythBuster DownUnderWhile M. Jones book Valve Amplifiers is OK; (although far from great; with so many issues not covered or covered superficially; so 3 stars from me); this book; Im afraid is a total miss. You will NOT learn how to build a valve amp from this book; if that was the authors intention.Without offense; I could be wrong; but I get an impression that whatever less-important material didnt find its way into the first book (because there are practical amp-building projects in it; more than in this one!!!); the author and the publisher decided to massage it into another book. Large font; large margins; huge photos and diagrams; but little practical substance. The author mentions some important issues and concepts; though not all; but then deals with most of them at a very basic level. I had the same problem with his first book; he seems to go so deep into certain issues (many of which I found of much lesser importance) and does not mention other; more important issues (to me). Of course; we all have our own definitions of whats important and what isnt; but Im afraid M. Jones; just as almost all contemporary authors on the subject (van der Veen; Rozenblit; at al) do not seem to have the "educational" skills of the older generation of writers (Millman; Seely; de France; Crowhurst); whose books are a pleasure to read. In other words; they make methodological and pedagogical mistakes and omissions. For instance; a good and reader-friendly book starts with easy issues and goes towards more complex ones. Or; when they talk about something and do lots of mathematical operations; they always tell the reader WHY they are going to do it; and why is it important to go through it; otherwise the reader may get lost or annoyed. These are only a couple of a dozen (and more) "rules" contemporary authors break at their peril. There was an opportunity to completely revise and improve this book for its 2nd edition; however; I can see very little difference between the two.
