An Album of Maya Architecture (Native American)

ePub An Album of Maya Architecture (Native American) by Tatiana Proskouriakoff in Arts-Photography

Description

Albrecht Duuml;rers 96 engravings; six etchings; and three dynamic drypoints are counted among his finest and best-known works. By the very nature of the medium; each fine line of an engraving is controlled by the artist and is dependent upon the pressure of the burin in his hand. In the engravings; Duuml;rer was therefore able to achieve an unprecedented intricacy of detail; subtlety of line; and three-dimensionality.All 105 of Duuml;rers works in these three mediums are reproduced in this edition. Among them are his most famous works; "Knight; Death and Devil;" "Melencolia I;" and "St. Jerome in His Study"; also portraits of his contemporaries; including Erasmus of Rotterdam and Frederick the Wise; popular and religious subjects sold by Duuml;rers wife at fairs; "Adam and Eve;" the Engraved Passion (15 subjects); and "The Virgin with the Dragonfly." Many of these show him even more charming and subtle than do the comparative woodcuts. Reproductions of experimental impression offer the opportunity to study Duuml;rers working method. Duuml;rers subjects range from scenes of the New Testament and the life of the Saints to portrayals of peasant personalities and representations of portentous events; such as "The Four Witches" and "Sol Justitae;" done in 1499 in anticipation of the Final Judgment that was widely predicted for the end of the century. The engraving "The Monstrous Sow of Landser;" a pig born with one head; four ears; two bodies; eight feet; on six of which it stood; and with two tongues;" similarly recorded in event that was regarded as an ill omen.In the present edition; by means of shooting in most instances directly to lithographic film from the finest impressions; the engravings; where possible; have been printed so that even under a magnifying glass Duuml;rers exact lines can be seen. Likewise; except in a very few cases; the sizes have been kept exactly to the originals; complete with border-lines where indicated. Walter L. Strauss has prepared the commentary for this edition with references to major catalogs; a summary of the statements of earlier commentators; and background material on the engravings; on Duuml;rer; and on the subjects of the works. If you are interested in Duuml;rer; a copy of this edition of the engravings is a must.

SchaferI think this book is excellent for anyone who wants to franken their own polishes; as opposed to going into business making and selling polishes. It gives you a rundown of polish ingredients first; so you know what the heck some of those things are. Goes into an overview of safety; plus the necessity of suspension base; and explains the different glitter sizes; including where to look for solvent-resistant ones. Lists of the (minimal) equipment yoursquo;ll need; and how to completely clean old polish bottles to re-use. (Buy a bunch of acetone; yoursquo;ll need it!) Lists several of the commercial polishes the author uses for base colors; so you donrsquo;t have to scramble trying to find a really true red; for instance. Plus how to use powder eye make-up for adding color. (Note; eyeshadow turns the polish matte.)Then she runs you through making a sample polish; step-by-step. After that there are several recipes for specific colors; in different finishes; matte; iridescent; glitter; holo; jelly and creme. Then a brief section on fixing polish; and retrieving glitter from existing polishes. A section with application tips and ideas; plus nail art ideas and how-tos. Last; a bunch of resources for supplies and other stuff. For such a small book (only 96 pages); it covers quite a lot of ground; and I think answers most questions anyone would have. If you wanted to do something outside the scope of this book; yoursquo;d have to experiment; but yoursquo;d have a good base of knowledge to build on. The photos are nice and clear; and in color; though not super-huge. I think itrsquo;s worth the money; even though I wasnrsquo;t crazy about every color recipe it had. Thats simply personal taste; though. With this book; I can make colors I *do* want. It did cover some details that tutorials Irsquo;ve read/watched didnrsquo;t include; which is one thing I was specifically looking for. You can color me satisfied.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great info!By NannerPolish lingo inbound! haha annddd its written by the make of Nail Pattern Boldness! Buy it just to support an indie maker! This is more about frakening than formulating your own polish from scratch. She does have some info about where to buy supplies if you want to full on make your own. What I thought was really helpful was the info about all the different additives; solvents; and plasticizers that make up polish....essentially; how polish "works". In the last few pages there is also some nail art too.If you want to know more about polish; buy it!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good book for beginnersBy Kate CarrollThe book has some great ideas; and I love how it breaks down what each of the chemical ingredients in nail polish actually does. Note that it does NOT deal with powdered pigments at all; and instead emphasizes mixing premade nail polishes together to produce different colors. Its also very glitter-heavy. But if youre a beginner and you love glitter polishes; this is a good place to start.
