Because of the profound effects of the built environment on the availability of natural resources for future generations; those involved with designing; creating; operating; renovating; and demolishing human structures have a vital role to play in working to put society on a path toward sustainability. This volume presents the thinking of leading academics and professionals in planning; civil engineering; economics; ecology; architecture; landscape architecture; construction; and related fields who are seeking to discover ways of creating a more sustainable built environment. Contributors address the broad range of issues involved; offering both insights and practical examples. In the book: Stephen Kellert describes the scope of the looming ecological crisis Herman Daly explains the unsustainability of the worlds economic system and the dangers inherent in the current movement toward globalization John Todd describes the evolution of wastewater processing systems inspired by natural systems John Tillman Lyle discusses the importance of landscape in the creation of the human environment Randall Arendt argues for a fundamental shift in land development patterns that would not only provide for more green space in new developments; but would also increase the profitability of developers and the quality of life for new home owners Thomas E. Graedel proposes the application of lessons learned from the emerging science of industrial ecology to the creation of "green" building. While the transition to sustainability will not be easy; natural systems provide abundant models of architecture; engineering; production; and waste conversion that can be used in rethinking the human habitat and its interconnections. This volume provides insights that can light the way to a new era in which a reshaped built environment will not only provide improved human living conditions; but will also protect and respect the earths essential natural life-support systems and resources.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great; buy it.By Irwin TallaricoThe composer who invented the Broadway Musical; at a time when Reviews were popular. A very controversial subject at a time when Jim Crow (1926) was rampant. Story with social content; all performers had to sing; dance and act. Very long for its time and the audience left without clapping; said nothing as they exited the theatre; and Kern and Hammerstein thought they had a flop on their hands; but the next day; the reviews were ecstatic and "Showboat" was a success. He was invited to write the music and lyrics for "Annie Get You Gun;" by Rogers and Hammerstein; but died of a heart attach while walking down 5th Ave. A has been composer; Irving Berlin; completed the score and had a smash hit on his very old hands;0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. All the songs you love; grouped by the showsBy Robert S. LaiAll the songs you love; grouped by the shows. This one is quite a comprehensive collection; and includes harder to find songs such as "Lovely to look at"; from Roberta. Usually you only get "Smoke gets in your eyes" from the same show.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating surprises inside this one.By P. E. HooverNow if this hasnt been an intriguing educational lesson. I have discovered songs I had no idea Jerome Kern composed. Fascinating song book. Most of the songs are easy within a short period of time. Some pieces take a bit longer for me to play - especially those ones I havent heard before. But I do like this song book; and have enjoyed playing from it. Print could be darker or the fonts a little larger.
