Proto-Feminist; Part-time Spy--Kick-Ass PlaywrightBy StephanieThis proto-feminist; part-time spy (I kid you not--for King Charles II) playwright is as good as William Wycherley and other restoration comedians--she was only recently re-discovered (1980s; I believe) because of sexist publishers and an all-male literary canon. Brilliant and insightful; she points out beautifully the inequality and hypocrisy of patriarchal culture. Its also just a heck of a lot of fun!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The RoverBy louise loweVirginia Woolf said that all women together should let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn - for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds - well; within the Rover; her sexual politics are personified through the character of Angelica Bianca : and it makes for an intriguing read! Brandishing swords; embracing rape and finding their own individual identities in a society that veiwed women as second class subject; this remained the most frequently performed play right up until 1800!
