Highest recommendation for this biographyBy Casper; the ghostIf you have not yet read a biography of Eugene Orsquo;Neill; the great American playwright; Dr. Dowlingrsquo;s latest scholarly achievement is the one you should read first. If you have read the earlier; multi-volume; biographies; this one will streamline events for you while giving the most recent research concerning the facts of Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s complex and fascinating life. Although Dr. Dowling is a leading Orsquo;Neill scholar; his writing style will appeal to the general reader as well as experts on Orsquo;Neill: it is lucid; straightforward; and inviting. Since Dr. Dowling identifies with Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s Catholic background; Irish heritage; and New London; Connecticut ldquo;hometown;rdquo; he brings authentic insight to his task; but he is unbiased in his truthful reportage of Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s private and public failings and triumphs. The page and photo layouts are aesthetically pleasing. The clever four-part structure weds book chapters to play acts; befitting Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s generally unknown flirtation with fiction and famous achievement in drama. While the biography pays meticulous respect to previous biographical studies of Orsquo;Neill; we get the newest information and photos not seen before (I did not know that Shane; Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s second son; was so handsome as an adult). The index is excellent. A list of Orsquo;Neillrsquo;s plays with dates appears in the back pages of the book. What I liked most about this biography: the timeline is easy to follow. The book does not bog down with infinite details. The impeccable scholarship is all documented also in the back pages (correlated with very helpful main-text page numbers where the superscript numbers appear); making for an unimpeded read that I did not want to end. This book deserves to win prizes.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent introduction to ONeill and his worksBy B. PhillipsI became entirely absorbed by this life treatment; despite being put off initially by an apparent academic approach which I slowly came to appreciate. It is clearly not meant to be a comprehensive biography of ONeill; though it gives a good scan of his life and his closest relationships. Dowling is an ONeill scholar and he interweaves the plays engagingly with ONeills inner development and life events. Be aware that the book is weighted towards the plays; their concepts and production values. You will gain a thorough sense of the role ONeill played in the development of the Provincetown Players; but it is by no means a complete history of that seminal group. Dowlings writing is warm with life; and his concern for his subject is contagious. I may at some point read a more comprehensive biography of ONeill; but Im very glad I read this one first. It would serve well for either a theatre history course or for theatre practitioners embarking on production.15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A Fine Biography that Reads like a NovelBy Dr. Barry H. LeedsThis fine biography of one of the greatest icons of American theater and literature is written in an elegant but accessible style; and the story of ONeills life as presented here is as compelling a read as a good novel. Meticulously researched by a prominent ONeill scholar; EUGENE ONEILL: A LIFE in FOUR ACTS represents a major addition to the body of secondary works on the great dramatist; and belongs in every library; public; institutional; and personal. A must read.
