Good on practical info; short on imagesBy LesblantThis book is crammed with useful information but I was disappointed in the lack of interesting; instructional or inspiring images. I was hoping to see some juicy encaustic for inspiration. Dont buy this book if thats what you want. If you need practical information it might be good.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful book! Over 150 paintings; full range of styles; loaded with useful information.By ArtLover8888A beautiful; hardbound book with nearly 200; heavy-gauge pages of useful information for the beginning artist who is new to the encaustic medium; as well as great; specific advice and techniques for more seasoned artists. The volume contains clear; concise chapters on how to get started; the materials needed; and beautiful; clear photographs. There are interviews with artists who are experienced with the medium. The interviews show examples of the artists work; along with specific questions and answers describing valuable details of their techniques. The artists who the author interviewed display a wide range of working styles; such as direct application; use of stencils; masking; use of photography; subtractive processes and many other other mixed mediums--a treasure trove of useful information that answers the question; "How did they do that?" One would pay considerably for this information at workshops. The final section of the book provides a lush gallery of paintings; both abstract and representational; that serves as inspiration and motivation. This book should be a part of every artists library who is even remotely interested in the encaustic medium.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Nice Addition for Encaustic ArtistsBy mhlAfter all the "How To" books on the market; ( granted; they were necessary when this medium first entered into the mainstream) this book is a great addition to any encaustic artists library because of the wonderful interviews with contemporary encaustic artists and the conceptual ideas behind their work. Much more meat in this one......
