This is a MUST HAVE for any music graduate student who wants a job!By LikesStuffAs as one of the books last proof readers; I believe I am qualified to review the book and I am honored to provide the first review of it here on . I didnt have to buy it as I have all the proofs on my computer; but in support of Dr. Hamanns great work and teaching; it is a pleasure to own the final product. As my review title says; if you are a graduate student in music; you absolutely MUST purchase and read this book. It will make or save your career! Or both. That is not an exaggeration! Dr. Hamanns has years of experience sitting on search and interview committees and he imparts practical--emphasis on *practical*--information that will give YOU the edge that will land you that job and help you to keep it.I took a course at the University of Arizona from Dr. Hamann that was a prep class for music graduate students. This course versed us in writing CVs; Teaching Philosophies; and cover letters and put us into a live interview and do an instructional demonstration. The course also covered all the minutiae that you wouldnt even think about but that you had better be aware of. It was an elective. I think it should be a required class; it was that good. One of the best courses Ive ever taken for any degree at any university; as a matter of fact. This book covers everything that we did in the class.Let me return to my emphasis on this book being filled with practical information. I am talking about real life stuff that you need to know. Besides the real stuff that committee look for in CVs; Teaching Philosophies; and Cover Letters; real stuff like what is practical for men and women to wear? What kind of day(s) and schedule can an interviewee expect? Who can you expect to talk with and what should you talk about with them and what specific things should you say and address? When they take you out to lunch (yes--they are observing you) what foods should you order and what should you avoid? What should be your tact when they offer you the position? And on; and on; and on...the information is priceless.So...Mr. or Ms. Graduate Student; you think you are hot stuff? Then prove it--buy the book!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book was a terrific help. Finishing my doctorateBy ANDREW QUIRINGThis book was a terrific help. Finishing my doctorate; I started applying to college/university jobs; expecting to submit several dozen applications before experiencing moderate success but I surprisingly advanced as a final candidate with both my first 2 applications; and won the position of the 2nd. This book is clearly not that magical to guarantee such luck/success but Im sure it played a significant role as it offered many brilliant insights and tips in a detailed; thorough yet colloquial manner about the process that perhaps doesnt get addressed so often.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
