Architecture of Regionalism in the Age of Globalization: Peaks and Valleys in the Flat World

ePub Architecture of Regionalism in the Age of Globalization: Peaks and Valleys in the Flat World by Liane Lefaivre; Alex Tzonis in Arts-Photography

Description

Bringing together the reflections of an architectural theorist and a philosopher; this book encourages philosophers and architects; scholars and designers alike; to reconsider what they do as well as what they can do in the face of challenging times. It does so by exploring the notion that architecture and design can (and possibly should); in their own right; make for a distinctive form of ethical investigation. The book is less concerned with absolutist understandings of the two components of ethics; a theory of ‘the good’ and a theory of ‘the right’; than with remaining open to multiple relations between ideas about the built environment; design practices and the plurality of kinds of human subjects (inhabitants; individuals and communities) accommodated by buildings and urban spaces. The built environment contributes to the inculcation of all sorts of values (good and bad). Thus; this book aims to change the way people commonly think about ethics; not only in relation to the built environment; but to themselves; their ways of thinking and modes of behaviour.

Grotesque but utterly trueBy ALove to reread this play.Story of people working in stock trading; working with serious money - and the contact with money and greed peels any culture and civilisation our of their selves. So that these characters recover to plain and bright and extreme passions and aggression and deeds like those of Barocco characters; like they are of same flesh and energy that Shakespeares Macbeth or Richard III are made of.And its full of bold and sharp comism - tastes like Shakespeare; again.A great play!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A play to be read out loud...By Jessica L. StoneOne must realize that in this play; Churchill is reviving verse drama into the 20th century. At first; I found this to be a most difficult read (in content and style). Yet everything that is difficult is not automatically to be considered bad. The subject matter of the book is largely concerned with the English stock market (and therefore largely uses its subsequent terminology). Churchill has EXTENSIVELY researched her subject matter; she deftly wields her words. Yet; do not be fooled. The play is not solely about the English stock market...or the death of Jake for that matter. Churchill is concerned with larger matters: that of commercial globalism; of the distance between generations; of traditions; of language and isolationism. Watch for WHEN words ryhme. Watch for WHEN characters are speaking alone. Watch for WHEN they are speaking together; in choruses. Everything is symbolic. Everything is incredibly; meticulously crafted. This might be hard to recognize at first (especially in the first run through); yet as long as you pay attention to Churchills markings (ie: when characters are interupting one another/speaking at the same time) it is easy to recognize the genius and artistry of this modern work.2 of 18 people found the following review helpful.
