Beautiful; high quality illustrations and descriptionsBy Alice StanEvery time I look at this book; I am amazed at all the work that went into creating it. It is a wonder and an immensely important reference for anyone who uses the images of trees in painting or design. You dont need to be an artist to appreciate this book; a landscaper; arborist or botanist could use it; too.11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Old Fashioned Values.By Me HereWritten in a time when good draughtsmanship was the basis of western art practice. It is therefore dependent on the same idea that impels one to study human anatomy. There are no step by step instructions on how to draw trees. You are expected to study and learn. This book is what it says it is - a detailed examination of the structure of vegetation. Useless for the beginner. An excellent reference for the professional. The authors own drawings are exquisite.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Rex Vicat Cole Master of AestheticsBy antigonum cajanI discovered this great work by accident; in some third rate college library next door; Universidad Sagrado Corazon. The concept of composition in landscape design; is totally absent in Puerto Rico. Any landscape is like a grocery store list of common places. One will find the same species planted without any hint of aesthetics...in a funeral home; hotel; school or cemetery.Vicat Cole almost 100 years ago; demonstrated through his own wonderful sketches;paintings and those of other painters; with superb writing skills; from the perspective of an artist; what painting; appreciating nature; trees and vegetation should be.As a critic of everything related to landscape; landscape installation and maintenance; composition and aesthetics;I recommend this work...It will expand focus and perspective when planting; designing a garden.
