Art Under Control in North Korea (2005)

ePub Art Under Control in North Korea (2005) by Jane Portal in Arts-Photography

Description

This is the first general and theoretical study devoted entirely to portraiture. Drawing on a broad range of images from Antiquity to the twentieth century; which includes paintings; sculptures; prints; cartoons; postage stamps; medals; documents and photographs; Richard Brilliant investigates the genre as a particular phenomenon in Western art that is especially sensitive to changes in the perceived nature of the individual in society. The authors argument on behalf of portraiture (and he draws on examples by such artists as Botticelli; Rembrandt; Matisse; Warhol and Hockney) does not comprise a mere survey of the genre; nor is it a straightforward history of its reception. Instead; Brilliant presents a thematic and cogent analysis of the connections between the subject-matter of portraits and the beholders response ndash; the response he or she makes to the image itself and to the person it represents. Portraitures extraordinary longevity and resilience as a genre is a testament to the power of this imaginative transaction between the subject; the artist and the beholder.

This one-woman play is like no otherBy Pseudonymous LilThis one-woman play is like no other: gut-wrenching; intriguing; exciting; and terrifying all at the same time; Brant does a stupendous job at putting us in the mind of the titular character. Although somewhat behind the current advances in the Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) community; this play provides a good look into what it might be like to be in war... remotely. Brant forces us to think about the moral and ethical issues that face RPA pilots; and by virtue of this being a play; the main character confides in us; the audience; and us alone. It very quickly becomes an intense and intimate play; and one that is certainly worth studying and/or reading for enjoyment (if one can truly enjoy such a heart-felt story).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Drone pilots -- who are they? and why it matters...By Innocent BystanderId heard about this being presented as a "one woman" theater production.I never asked the question... "who flies the drones"? Are they pilots? Howdo they get this kind of duty assignment? Where are they based? What istheir daily routine like? How is it different than flying aerial missions? Whatis the psychological effect of having drone flying as a "job"... does the senseof a military assignment disappear over time? So Im framing this review asa series of questions so as not to have to give a spoiler alert. For any Vietnam veteran reading this -- it shakes the whole concept of "war".For an Iraqi - Afghan veteran read this -- there is a sinking feeling of having devolved into a different definition of soldiering; of serving and protecting. And then... I think I heard that the play had been hijacked and made into a moviewith a male lead... Not the same! part of the tension in the journey is that this isthe heros journey taken by.... a woman. And can it still be called... a heros journey.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is a really great piece of original theaterBy Tim HabegerThis is a really great piece of original theater. Timely and fun; if I can use that word to describe a devastating story of drone warfare and its human cost. Weaving connections from many different angles; the story never stop finding new insights about the ways we can connect as human beings.
