Art and Enlightenment: 6 (Library of Scottish Philosophy)

DOC Art and Enlightenment: 6 (Library of Scottish Philosophy) by Jonathan Friday in Arts-Photography

Description

During the intellectual and cultural flowering of Scotland in the 18th century few subjects attracted as much interest among men of letters as aesthetics - the study of art from the subjective perspective of human experience. All of the great philosophers of the age - Hutcheson; Hume; Smith and Reid - addressed themselves to aesthetic questions. Their inquiries revolved around a cluster of issues - the nature of taste; beauty and the sublime; how qualitative differences operate upon the mind through the faculty of taste; and how aesthetic sensibility can be improved through education. This volume brings together and provides contextual introductions to the most significant 18th century writing on the philosophy of art. From the pioneering study of beauty by Francis Hutcheson; through Humes seminal essays on the standard of taste and tragedy; to the end of the tradition in Dugald Stewart; we are swept up in the debate about art and its value that fascinated the philosophers of enlightenment Scotland - and continues to do so to this day.

Buying reading this book = a smart career move!!!!By A CustomerIf you only have enough money to buy one book about show-biz careers; this should be the one! Buzzell brings her background as a career counselor to the table; as well as her stints at various film studios. She knows what YOU need to know and she share that knowledge in an accessible way. I would recommend this book to anyone considering ANY job in the entertainment industry. Its not just for actors or other so-called "talents"; its a must-read for technical/crew people as well.7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. More than just HollywoodBy joysyearThis book was required reading for an exploratory class I was taking on Entertainment Technology Careers. It proved to teach me a lot more than just that; it gives you insightful and helpful tips as well as the exercises within the chapters that assist you in finding out what it is that you really want to do and where your motivation comes from. I think it is an invaluable book for not only people seeking work in the entrainment field but for people who arent really sure which way to go about it or which end theyd like to be in.
