So heres the thingBy M.C.C.A lot- an impressively overwhelming number in fact- of the people in this book telling their stories have garnered international fame for their design work. However; they put their pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else. This means that; aside from their phenomenal design skills; they arent really that special. Yes! Some of the anecdotes in this book are hilarious (Hey Roman Mars...); worth your time or insightful in some impactful way: maybe 5% pass that test. The rest are remarkable only for their unrestrained normalcy.Because each story is immediately followed by an extensive biography of the preceding story teller; the whole book feels extremely sycophantic. At the beginning; Singer alludes to the primary qualm that I certainly had with the book when he rhetorically asks if the world really needs another design book. The thing about rhetorical questions is that they are asked when the answer is already widely known. Unfortunately for Mr. Singer and this book specifically; he believes that the answer to his question is yes. Equally unfortunately is that Mr. Singer calls this a design book when it; despite its cast of characters; has very little to do with design at all. Its just a book of stories told by people who are somewhat famous for doing things completely unrelated to the sleepy tales that they are telling. And it shows. That being said; you should find this book in the store and read Roman Mars section. I will never be able to listen to him on his radio show in the same way ever again. I mean; you REALLY need to.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Up Close and Personal ndash;By Karin HibmaGetting to know the person behind the magic is one of secrets of great design; and great designers. Brian has captured those person to person stories by simply asking. I read this cover-to-cover; laughing and commiserating. I recommend it to everyone!
