Hillier and Hanson are geographers but this book would appeal to anthropologists; sociologists; urban planners; and mathematicians. According to Hillier and Hanson human culture is inherently spatial in its expression though it often has not been considered as such. The authors take a topological approach and provide for a "space syntax" analysis that treats human architecture as a "meta-linguistic" system. That is; human architecture is a system of signs; a simple form of language. By analyzing architecture and human use of space in this way the plan of a building becomes more important to analyze than the decorative facade; which typically is the focus of architectural historians. In sum; this book and its approach has given rise to a number of structural and post-structural methods for architectural analysis.0 of 5 people found the following review helpful.
