A Real Treat For Any True Musical LoverBy Vanessa ClarkEVERYTHING you can ever learn about West Side Story is in this incredibly and even overwhelmingly amazing collection of essays that explores a beloved classic from its rocky; humble beginnings; its genesis; its music; its casting; its characters; and its overall influence on culture. The essays are very long and meaty; but are never dry and boring. Of the eight; my favorites were 1 - "Theres A Place For Us": Reflections on an American Musical; 4 - "Mambo!": West Side Story and The Hispanic; and 5 - "I And Velma Aint Dumb": The Women of West Side Story. This book goes beyond the basics; it truly builds a testament to how West Side Story; like all musicals; is a miracle; but holds an even more miraculous journey that we learn entirely here. This book isnt just for fans of the musical; but fans of musicals in general; a real treat for any true musical lover.
