As soon as I heard the story of the flooding of Jocassee Valley; I was drawn to the place. It is an amazingly beautiful lake - I cant imagine a more beautiful place on earth - but it was born at the cost of a whole way of life for those who grew up in the Valley. Debbies book; "Whipoorwill Farewell: Jocassee Remembered" brought to life the anguish and heartbreak of those who had to leave their generations-old homesteads and watch their beloved Valley fill with flood waters. This new book not only shows the poignant sadness of sacrificing one form of incredible beauty for another; but it also shows what an incredible engineering feat the construction of the dam itself was.
