Waste of money. I feel like I been robbed and cheated by the author.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For Map Lovers...By HMS WarspiteDonald Wigals "Historic Maritime Maps" is a richly illustrated look at the world of European maritime maps from the period 1290 to 1699. Wigals concise narrative moves back and forth between the audacious voyages of explorers such as Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan; and the cartographers who attempted to capture their results. The product is a short history of the European exploration of the worlds oceans and of various schools of cartography. The text includes color reproductions of a considerable number of maps from the period; showing the progression in the increasingly accurate portrayal of land forms and the growing appreciation of the actual sizes of oceans. The end sheets of the book have a modern global map showing the dates and tracks of the voyages of exploration described in the narrative; as a point of reference. The illustrations include portraits of some of the intrepid explorers. It may be a minor complaint; but the format of the book is just a little too small to allow a good look at some of the older maps. There are also some annoying discrepancies in Wigals historical chronology. Those faults aside; "Historic Maritime Maps" is likely to be of real interest to map lovers; especially those fascinated by progress in the art and science of cartography over the years. The book is recommended to that audience.
