Jimmy McDonough captures all of that incredible and infuriating force in Shakey (which derives from Neils filmmaking pseudonym; Bernard Shakey). The author doesnt shy away from anything - the bitter split between his parents; Neils tenuous relationships with Crosby; Stills Nash; and the powerful; often difficult people Neil works or worked with (David Briggs; Jack Nitschke; Elliot Roberts etc). Neil even pulled the plug on this book after giving his permission to write it - but McDonough wrote it anyway. Neil also said hed never write an autobiography; but he then went and did that too (Waging Heavy Peace). As I said; wilful and unpredictable. Great book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Neil But Were Afraid to AskBy Deborah AndersonThis hefty tome probably would have worked much better had it been about 300 pages shorter. Ive been a Neil Young fan for decades and I did learn a lot about him by reading this book. But its very redundant. It left me hoping for more as far as his personal life is concerned rather than pages after pages of obscure concerts and about 40-50 less Neil Young interviews; I was about ready to throw my Kindle across the room if I read one more "innaresting"; "heheheh"; and this book most likely broke the Guinness Book of Records as far as dropping the F bomb. It was okay but much more boring than interesting with no in between.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Always a fan; now gone over the edge!By Pat in NHI always had a "thing" for Neil Young; the tortured artist of the late 60s. He came to Boston a few times and I tried to get to him after the show; but...alas. I saw him again when I was in college; followed him from Boston to New York; the elusive loner brushed past me; never knowing I was supposed to be in his life. Ah well; turn it up to 2010. I finally got the book that tells EVERYTHING about Neil Youngs journey through life. Jimmy told the good; the bad; and the ugly of what makes up this man. His single-minded drive toward making the exact music he needed to; without excuse or apology; was totally inspiring. This man truely lived his life without hesitation. He was on his own; and often invited people to grace his stage and share the light; but make no mistake; it was all Neil. The breakdown of periods in his life that led him to make several genres of music was also a shot of clarity. This book doesnt sugar coat anything. It is an experience into the 1970 drug-laced laid back culture and freedom that well never experience again. Stories of Buffalo Springfield; Rick James; and CSN were really cool; I learned more about the characters of CSN from this book than from their own book.If you love Neil; get the book. Its long; but Ive read it twice and want more. If youre a hippie woman; watch out. Youll fall in love with Neil all over again.
