An Extraordinary Work of Travel and ScholarshipBy jeffergrayThis extraordinarily comprehensive four-volume set is a remarkable work not only of scholarship but also of travel; since the author has actually been to each of the hundreds of sites he describes. A delight for the armchair traveler and an invaluable resource for anyone actually planning on traveling to Eastern Turkey. It is very well-illustrated with photographs and diagrams (some of the latter appear close to hand-drawn; and arent terribly polished; but theyre a lot better than nothing -- and nothing is what youll find on most of these sites in other sources). Since these volumes cover everything from neolithic sites to Islamic ones; this is the series to consult if you want to learn what remains of Armenian; Byzantine or Crusader sites such as Ani; Antioch; Dara; Manzikert; or of multi-layered sites such as Harran; Charchemish; and Zeugma. This is plainly not just an exceptional work of scholarship; but a labor of love; in the spirit of such intrepid British explorers of the Middle East as Gertrude Bell; Freya Stark; and T.E. Lawrence.
