From the first pages it almost shouts "See how smart I am; how well I can assemble words into sentences? It is not put together to provide useful information (which it _might_ contain; as it is to display the prowess of the writer. NordenA well reasoned and very useful theory of African-American literature; cross-read between music; African-derived folk culture; and various appropriations and deformations of the novel and other Western genres. Slightly contaminated by mid/late 80s critical theory lingo; but all of it is meaningful and germane to Bakers argument. Strong emphasis on ideological critique in both postcolonial and Marxist veins; would be good to have equal attention to feminist perspectives; but thats another book. I advise interested readers to disregard previous review saying the book has nothing to offer--it has much to offer.
