Review
2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A thorough introduction to Fashion and CelebrityBy Gabrielle SimpsonThis is my area of research; so this book was essential reading for me; as it is the first book which explores fashion and celebrity. It defines the difference between those who are celebrated in their field; (and there are many of those in all areas of specialization)and those people who are well known and celebrated the world over.Of course there are people like Princess Diana; the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen of England; but Church Gibson looks at the impact of film and TV; and its celebrity stars.Church Gibson uses Sex and the City as an exemplar; thoroughly examining the impact of the TV series. And then films about fashion: The Devil wears Prada". How many had heard of Manolo Blahnik shoes or Prada before those releases? The book is well referenced; and an easy enough read; especially for those interested in the subject.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Reads more like a personal diatribeBy MatthewGibson writes in her introduction "Within contemporary cultural theory; there is a curious reluctance to offer up judgement; let alone to moralize." She adds "We cannot simply discuss celebrity as an interesting phenomenon; whether we do so within the media or to further our careers in the academy; surely we should be prepared to be more critical and to share our reservations." If youre looking for a book that takes a critical approach to fashion and celebrity culture as in "expressing or involving an analysis of the merits and faults of a work or topic;" and not critical as in "expressing adverse or disapproving comments or judgments;" this is not the book youre looking for.Gibbons also bemoans capitalism and the rise of celebrity culture. (e.g. "This new global celebrity culture is; in fact; in a worrying way; a major aspect of just one more configuration of Western imperialism; and possibly the most profitable yet.") If you have a difficult time reading opinions from someone who is anti-capitalist and anti-Western; Id suggest this book isnt for you.She also regurgitates ideas that are well known. In reference to the eighteen century; she had to say "The period witnessed the new scientific discoveries and consequent technological developments associated with the Industrial Revolution. They would transform Western society from a predominantly rural one into one increasingly centred on urban and industrial life." I could end there; but I want to belabour my point. She continues: "Some of the new technologies also made possible the wide circulation of printed materialndash;newspapers; broadsheets; pamphlets and so on. The combination of radical scientific changes and the tumultuous political events of that periodmdash;above all; of course; the French Revolution of 1789mdash;mark the beginnings of modernity and the emergence of modern capitalism." And so on as the rest of the paragraph continues. If you do not like books that give an introductory overview of topics like these; this might also be an added reason for why this book might not be a good fit.Truth be told; I could not make it past the first chapter; which is a shame; because I read the sample and felt the book was quite promising; and I definitely want to read about this topic. Its just not often I feel so frustrated while reading. So take my review with a grain of salt; and perhaps this book is a better fit for you than I; but I also hope this review saves some others from buying this book who would have also been frustrated. I wish I could get my money back.
