Description

Western fashion has been widely appreciated and consumed in Tokyo for decades; but since the mid-1990s Japanese youth have been playing a crucial role in forming their own unique fashion communities and producing creative styles which have had a major impact on fashion globally.Geographically and stylistically defined; subcultures such as Lolita in Harajuku; Gyaru and Gyaru-o in Shibuya; Age-jo in Shinjuku; and Mori Girl in Kouenji; reflect the affiliation and identities of their members; and have often blurred the boundary between professionals and amateurs for models; photographers; merchandisers and designers.Based on insightful ethnographic fieldwork in Tokyo; Fashioning Japanese Subcultures is the first theoretical and analytical study on Japans contemporary youth subcultures and their stylistic expressions. It is essential reading for students; scholars and anyone interested in fashion; sociology and subcultures.

Good value; good overview of the Pre-RaphaelitesBy ReviewerThis is a pretty good; inexpensive survey of the Pre-Ralphaelite Brotherhood (and in fact goes a bit beyond the original painters who signed their paintings PRB as Academy students). The quality of the reproductions is pretty good; though its hard to capture the optical effects created by PRB techniques (such as glazing over white to create luminosity ) particularly in paintings by Hunt; which can almost look a little garish in reproductions of this size and quality.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is an old work - buy a newer oneBy AmandaIts confusing that the date on this edition is given as 2008: that; please note; is the date of the translation; but it is NOT the date the book was first written in French. I cant find the date the book was originally published (which is annoying); but to give you an idea; Robert de la Sizeranne died in 1932 at the age of 68. I was looking for a more modern take on the Pre-Raphaelites than this: theres a lot of weird stuff about "Englishness" that sounds very dated indeed now. The history of how the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was founded seems good; though; and of course that doesnt date as quickly; and theres a short biography of each of the major painters in the back. There are also many illustrations; but of course they look terrible on my original (e-ink) Kindle. Dont know if theyre viewable in color on the Fire. On the whole; I dont think this book is worth $8; I wish I had found a newer one.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful and well written book about the brotherhoodBy Kevin Nazario BartolomeiA enjoy this one a lot; the historical part is straight an to the point; the image selection is also good; even when i would have loved more by Rosetti and Burne Jones; but is a matter of personal taste. This is a good title at a good price; if you are curious about this unique moment and group in arts history buy it now.
