So many people i admire have committed suicideBy Lewis WoolstonAs a long term Joy Division fan Ive read whatever I can about the band but most books that have been published are the second rate memoirs of scenesters and journos. This was written by the widow of Ian Curtis so carries a lot more weight then most.Deborah Curtis tells her story with compassion and honesty. What really struck me was the sense that Ian had planned to die young all along; he had idolized Jim Morrison and other dead rock stars and I think it really was part of his plan to reach an artistic peak and die there. Immortalised forever by music fans the world over.If youre a Joy Division fan this book is a must read.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Essential for JD fans; even if its a bit harshBy Rich L.Ouch! From reading this book; Ian was not the nicest of people. But most "rock stars" are not very nice; so what else should you expect? Deborah doesnt paint the best picture; but she doesnt have to-she was his wife. And she waited years to print this; so its not like its a cash-in book. Worth it alone for the complete gig listing and all the lyrics (and more.) True; theres no reply from Ian; but thats not her fault; is it? A great read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. There was got to be more to Ian Curtis than this...By J. ThorpI did enjoy this book. It was very interesting and pretty well written. I am a long time fan of Joy Division and I think Ian Curtis was fabulous. The story is obviously pretty one-sided; despite the quotes that Deborah Curtis got from friends of Ian. But of course it would be one-sided anyway since largely; this book is HER opinion of what was going on. I think there was much more to Ian than she explained. I did empathize with her though; because they got married at such a young age; as did I; and had a child pretty soon after we were wed. A slight spoiler here: She knew Ian was in fragile condition and seemed depressed a lot. She tried to support him; but failed to recognize the signs of a possilbe suicide until after he had died. I feel sorry for Deborah; she did what she thought was best. I certainly hope she doesnt blame herself. Ian wanted to die young like many other of his musical heroes. And from his death - in my opinion; he became a legend. The greatest part of this book is the ending - it has almost complete lyrics (I didnt see the lyrics for "Novelty" for some reason?); gig list; and discography.Anyway; long live Joy Divisions music and R.I.P. Ian.
