This book gives a compelling account and analysis of the process by which this has come about. At the same time it takes seriously those places where; for whatever reason; this process has not occurred; or has been reversed; and provides explanations for these developments. The first part of this story recounts how the cultural; political and economic power of Europe and; from the later nineteenth century North America; has provided an impetus for the adoption of whatever was at that time standard Western dress. Set against this; Robert Ross shows how the adoption of European style dress; or its rejection; has always been a political act; performed most frequently in order to claim equality with colonial masters; more often a male option; or to stress distinction from them; which women; perhaps under male duress; more frequently did. The book takes a refreshing global perspective to its subject; with all continents and many countries being discussed. It investigates not merely the symbolic and message-bearing aspects of clothing; but also practical matters of production and; equally importantly; distribution. Dream is a central image for Shakespeare; encompassing at once the terrors of the irrational and the creative powers of the imagination—ones deepest fears and highest aspirations. What makes strolling down a particular street enjoyable? The authors of Measuring Urban Design argue its not an idle question. Inviting streets are the centerpiece of thriving; sustainable communities; but it can be difficult to pinpoint the precise design elements that make an area appealing. This accessible guide removes the mystery; providing clear methods to measure urban design. In recent years; many walking audit instruments" have been developed to measure qualities like building height; block length; and sidewalk width. But while easily quantifiable; these physical features do not fully capture the experience of walking down a street. In contrast; this book addresses broad perceptions of street environments. It provides operational definitions and measurement protocols of five intangible qualities of urban design; specifically imageability; visual enclosure; human scale; transparency; and complexity. The result is a reliable field survey instrument grounded in constructs from architecture; urban design; and planning. Readers will also find a case study applying the instrument to 588 streets in New York City; which shows that it can be used effectively to measure the built environments impact on social; psychological; and physical well-being. Finally; readers will find illustrated; step-by-step instructions to use the instrument and a scoring sheet for easy calculation of urban design quality scores. For the first time; researchers; designers; planners; and lay people have an empirically tested tool to measure those elusive qualities that make us want to take a stroll. Urban policymakers and planners as well as students in urban policy; design; and environmental health will find the tools and methods in Measuring Urban Design especially useful.

Started to leaf through; but got hooked; and spent several hours looking and reading. Book is a mix of photos; line drawings; and colored paintings; along with lots of written explanations. Photos are among the best Ive encountered in a botany book. Book is logically arranged; so specific topics can be read separately. Suggestions for some simple experiments for observation are also provided. Glossary and bibliography included.I am a botanical artist; so this book is wonderful for providing close-up drawings of small plant bits. But; anyone interested in botany should enjoy this book. Its almost like a textbook for an amateurs university course in botany. I love this book.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
