WalbyFor those who have read her previous two books "In Search of Music Education" and "Transforming Education;" youll find that "The Art of Teaching Music" carries a very different tone. Whereas the first two books were heavy philosophical readings filled with dialectics and ambiguities; this latest book is much more personal; easy to reading; and inspiring for teachers of all ages. Jorgensen continues with her style of plotting out dialectical tensions to discover truth; but supplements these tensions with her own personal antidotes. This makes the over all tone feel more like a conversation with a veteran teacher over issues you struggle with everyday; yet rarely recognize. Its very insightful; yet filled with warm moments. The content is broken into three large sections; what it is to be a teacher; the nature of musicality; and how music instruction should be conducted. Within each large section; there are smaller qualities that address the larger issue; which are broken down further to short two or three page dialects that define the qualities. My overall impression is that it is a very well written and organized book that looks at many of the deeper foggy issues facing teachers in a very practical and comforting way. If youre looking for a challenging philosophical work to challenge previous theories or add insight to your own; Id advice you to read her previous two book; but if youre looking for an thought provoking and gratifying reading without the heavy handed style of academia; Id suggest this.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
