DOC Broadway Plays and Musicals: Descriptions and Essential Facts of More Than 14;000 Shows through 2007: 3 by Thomas S. Hischak in Arts-Photography

Description

New York Cityrsquo;s Broadway district is by far the most prestigious and lucrative venue for American performers; playwrights; entertainers and technicians. While there are many reference works and critical studies of selected Broadway plays or musicals and even more works about the highlights of the American theater; this is the first single-volume book to cover all of the activities on Broadway between 1919 and 2007. More than 14;000 productions are briefly described; including hundreds of plays; musicals; revivals; and specialty programs. Entries include famous and forgotten works; designed to give a complete picture of Broadwayrsquo;s history and development; its evolution since the early twentieth century; and its rise to unparalleled prominence in the world of American theater. The productions are identified in terms of plot; cast; personnel; critical reaction; and significance in the history of New York theater and culture. In addition to a chronological list of all Broadway productions between 1919 and 2007; the book also includes approximately 600 important productions performed on Broadway before 1919.

The Passion of Leonard BertsteinBy Bonnie De ClarkLeonard Bernstein did something extraordinary in creating his young peoples concerts. He brought classical music to a young audience that otherwise might not have been exposed to this music. I was one of those young people and I can say that I learned my love of classical music as a result of Mr. Bersteins great gift to the world of music. Mr. Bernstein was a truly gifted teacher and we are blessed that most of his Young Peoples Concerts are available on video or DVD. To those who have never exerienced this treasure; do your self a favor and view one. I gurantee youll be back for more. Mr. Bertsteins passion for music is contagious.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Classic companion to Young Peoples Concert DVD setBy Samuel J. P. GrillsWonderful to experience once again; after religiousy watching and hearing all the original broadcasts from 1959-1973; times that now seem so innocent; with the opportunity to now reflect upon the original program content and personality of Leonard Bernstein. As an amateur musician; in the classic sense; wanting to intellectually communicate an appreciation of music with others; it is refreshing to review those programs as a primer for any and all kinds and styles of music that will live for as long as we keep breathing.
