Eunice Lipton was a fledging art historian when she first became intrigued by Victorine Meurent; the nineteenth-century model who appeared in Edouard Manets most famous paintings; only to vanish from history in a haze of degrading hearsay. But had this bold and spirited beauty really descended into prostitution; drunkenness; and early death-or did her life; hidden from history; take a different course altogether? Eunice Liptons search for the answer combines the suspense of a detective story with the revelatory power of art; peeling off layers of lies to reveal startling truths about Victorine Meurent-and about Lipton herself.

This book introduces several weaving techniques to weavers no matter what their skill level. Warp-faced weaving is employed for straps and bands; as well as braids of various kinds. Some of the designs require a second rigid heddle. Woven Treasures is project book for beginning weavers as well as for more advanced weavers who just want to explore and sample other weave structures using readily available materials. The instructions are clear and complete.38 of 38 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful BookBy CustomerBecause of the subject matter; woven bags; I had looked forward to the publication of this book for several months. I did not realize that all the projects are made on a rigid heddle loom. In addition to inspiring weavers to make beautiful bags this wonderful book could also be used to learn rigid heddle weaving. The directions are easy to understand and are supported with clear; good photos. All the projects are appealing and there are different examples of each technique. The author has written for Handwoven magazine and is obviously good at giving instruction. The projects are very nice but the book is worth buying for the photos alone. These bags are eye-candy that captures the imagination and inspires the reader to try it out. An excellent book all the way around.24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Treasure Trove of Traditional TechniquesBy Caroline M. AlexanderLike other readers; I have been lusting after this book since I first heard of it. The tantalizing photos released pre-publication only made me keener to get the book; and it was well worth the wait!I am a rigid heddler; and I adore tribal weavings; so there are two pluses for a start. The text is easy to follow; the photographs fabulous and the projects straightforward; but there is more! The author expects weavers to be able to take the skills she teaches; and create our own projects using the skills we have learned; and without running to the text each step of the way to see if its done correctly. I immediately had my little loom warped up; and my biggest dilemma now is which project to chose! Each project is set out so that materials; sett and any diagrams are easy to organise and have ready. There are also lots of handy hints; like how to warp up for a balanced weave or a warp-faced weave; and she has sections on twining; tablet weaving and pick-up that can be combined in the projects in different ways. These may be millenia-old techniques; but they have a fresh modern face to them that will see them popular for the next 1;000 years.Books that not only teach; but inspire; are big winners in my book; and this is one of the biggest!Definitely a keeper!
