For someone whos an absolute beginner at the instrument (whether or not theyre a beginner in all music); I recommend this book whole heartedly. Several useful points:1) It was written by someone who KNOWS the oboe. Some of the little nitpicky weirdness involving the instrument are dealt with smoothly and with ease. E.g.; the student plays F# up until lesson 7 or so; and then and only then do they begin to learn about the pitfalls of F natural fingerings.2) at the top of every lesson is a clear definition of what youre learning that lesson (new notes; new fingerings; new concepts). They also point out the first time the new concept is used in the music.3) Clear; straight forward; easy to read fingering chart.4) Well-known folk tunes to play. The only downside to this book is that it teaches forked F as involving the Eb key. Technically; a forked F should only use 1-2-3 / 1-3; but not all beginner instruments will speak without the Eb.When using this book; I dont always go on to book 2 in this series; depending upon the age and musical level of the student. But I always start here.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is easy to followBy Cav E. ThanMy 10 year old daughter just started playing.
