A lot of information; a lot of snarkBy CustomerThis book is nothing more than a list of known studio recordings by Bruce Springsteen from 1972-84 (demos; and albums from Greetings through Born in the USA; with a sampling of stuff that would appear; years later; on Tracks; 18 Tracks; the Promise; and the bonus disc of The Essential Bruce Springsteen). Its not a biography; its not a narrative. Its really a list of songs; recoding dates; and a small bit of information about the number of times recorded; etc.Anyone who had the kind of access Heylin did would be able to put together the list he has here; his real achievement is in getting the access; not the way he puts it together. And for someone who seems to like Bruce Springsteen (even if hes not as hagiographic as other authors *cough Dave Marsh*); the level of scorn displayed here is surprising.The big problem is that this is really the appendix to Heylins other Springsteen book; E Street Shuffle. In this book; however; you get truncated discussions of the song as well as things like; "For more discussion; see pages x and y." Unfortunately; you dont HAVE those pages because theyre in the other book. I dont (yet) have that other book; so maybe the summary information provided here makes more sense in context. But I cant really recommend this book to anyone other than Bruce obsessives; who will probably get the other one anyway. As it is; its like the extensive footnotes to a doctoral dissertation; which make little sense devoid of context.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
