However; having read all the books and magazines and being a fan of the band since 89. I had to read it. I had previously read Simon Spences War and Peace book about the Roses which was amazing. This book was great because its usually Shaun and Bez we read about; this book reveals why thats the case but it turns out actually the main people the author interviews are the musicians. Their story often not heard. So it was nice to hear about the band from Paul Ryder; Shauns Brother and a great bass player; Gary Gaz Whelan The Mondays drummer who was still drummer through various incarnations and finally their guitarist Mark Day.The book does a few great things in my opinion its dispells many myths about the band; it tells their story and corroborates stuff you really think couldnt be made up and lastly it focuses more on the music than any previous works published. The book was a real page turner for me and got me thinking about all my favourite bands from Manchester and it illustrates how great the Mondays were but they were actually the best band from Manchester as they were innovativers and pioneers. The author treats the band with great sympathy as the Mondays; in particular Shaun were the architects of their own downfall when they seriously could have broken America.Anyone who has read these books knows they all follow the same pattern; growing up; becoming the band; making it big; the fall outs; the break up and the redemption this book has it all and more. I cant recommend it enough; I was particularly pleased that the book focused on the main story; the music also told the story of Factory and it protagonists and mentioned all the incarnations as more an after story.
