It adds a few interesting pieces of information that didnt make it into the documentary; such as the daily life relation between the filming crew and the band; how some meeting such as Dave Mustaines happened; a lot of discussion with the bands management; a little more in-depth explanation about Phil Towles involvement with the band; how the film was made on the edition room; etc. In general; it pretty much follows the same narrative arc than the documentary; where it starts with the band crumbling apart and ends up with Metallica on tour. The bad part of it is that; for getting to the juicy details you have to go throughpages and pages about one of the directors life; his past films; how he wasnt in good terms with his partner; how he almost screwed his career and; since this was released in 2004; a good dose of unnecessary 9/11 drama. All of these repeated over and over along the book. The bright side is; of course; the full access to the band in one of their worst moments and how they made it through. Many of the things the author mentions are on the Extras DVD though; but its always nice to get more information about those scenes as well.I wouldnt even recommend it to Metallica fans; but to "Some Kind Of Monster" fans. I am one myself; I watch it at least once every year. If you are one as well; the book will satisfy you. If you are just a Metallica fan; you may be turned down by this period in the band and how the author call St. Anger an incredible record with incredible songs. Overall it is a nice read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. As close as you can possibly get to the bandBy i_like_cheeseThis makes the band and their entourage (especially Phil Towle) seem much more human than the movie. Fascinating insight into Metallica and the film-making process.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy Carolyn ArredondoIt made me excited to see film again.
