A Delightful Play ManuscriptBy CustomerThis is the play manuscript on which was based the 1954 movie "Hobsons Choice" brilliantly acted with Charles Laughton; John Mills and Brenda de Banzie; one of my favorite movies of all time. It was nice to be able to read the play and compare it to the movie. Much of the dialogue and action in the movie was taken directly from the play. Some of the scene settings did have to be different but that made it a bit of fun to see how the play was distinct from the movie and visa versa. The play itself is about a successful boot maker in 1880s England; Mr. Hobson; who dominates his three daughters. His elder daughter Maggie decides enough is enough and entices Hobsons chief boot maker to marry her and then set up a shop of their own. There is much humor in this play as well as showing the strength that a woman needed in that era in which society gave women little credence. I truly enjoyed reading this.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Appealing Edition*By Nancy KopaldWhen I went looking for a copy of the original play of this movie that I love so much; I doubted I would find it at all; much less in such a nice edition as this. Its a large format (8 1/2 X 11) paperback; thin and easy to handle. The paper is good quality; the print is large. Ive never heard of Desmondous Publishing; but someone did this wonderful play the honor of issuing it in a very appealing edition. And David Lean had the good sense to keep almost all of Brighouses dialog verbatim in his film. *Note: 45 pages into the book; the dialog and stage direction fonts change places.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great PlayBy C ArmstrongI saw this play at my school once and decided to study it more. Really fabulous story. It was cool seeing how the play I saw had been changed from the original.
