Not sure this book works for the intended audience(s)By CamberBeing a structural engineer myself (among other hats); Ive been a fan of David Blockleys work since my college days more than two decades ago. Hes clearly one of the "deep thinkers" in the field; albeit coming from the academic side rather than professional practice. So I felt compelled to read this book to see how he presents my field to the general reader. My conclusion? Being honest; Im not sure that this book will work well for the general reader. Theres just too much theoretical material which I suspect will go over the heads of most general readers. Much of that material (eg; virtual work concepts) is challenging even for engineering students to learn; despite being presented in engineering textbooks more systematically; in more detail; and with more illustrations. And on the practical side; Im not sure that this book gives a good feel for what we as practicing structural engineers really do either - at least I didnt see myself depicted in the book.So is there a good audience for this book? If so; who is that audience? I dont have answers; but perhaps my familiarity with the subject matter prevents me from accurately judging the value of the book for general readers; as well as engineering students and young engineers. I hope so - this is a case where I hope Im "overqualified" to review a book.
