Like other sanitoriums; they no longer exist in our world.By reading this book; you see the history of the place as more than just a massive hospital but a community that lasted for decades until it closed. The black and white photographs shows the history of the Sanitorium from its beginnings as a reform school to a center for tuberculosis patients and later for mentally ill patients. The place was massive with large buildings; employee housing; and landscaped grounds. This place employees and served thousands. This book does a superb job in recounting the history past; present; and current state as park land.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Well done Rich!By hidinginshadowsGreat job Rich! I read it cover to cover; couldnt put it down. What a beautifull tribute to an incredible place that helped so many people. We discovered it after its heyday; perhaps we discovered the Essex Mountain Sanatorium during its swan song; but that didnt matter to us; or a thousand other explorers! I know it helped me though; those cold; dark; abandoned buildings offered me a refuge from a world that I didnt quite understand at the time. They also transformed me into the man I am today! I cant thank you enough Rich for this book; it brought back so many memories. Memories of a time when we were young; when we had our whole lives ahead of us; memories of our since lost youth. This book also gives a face; and a voice to the silent victims of Tuberculosis who died there; and to the thousands who were saved! -HIDINGINSHADOWS3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating! A must read.By Anne G. StiresBravo Richard Kennedy. Fascinating account of the disease TB; its sufferers and a communities response to the crushing need it presented. A must read for residents of Essex County; its medical; as well as many in its courageous political community; and for those who are uplifted by positive human endeavor. I still ask; how could such a magnificent complex; built by the enormous; hard labor of many; have been simply let go to ruin? That said; I happily accept the upland meadow of grasses and wildflowers that now occupy the site; still offering respite to many by the way. A fitting replacement!
