For the Absolute Beginner with no calligraphy experience - As chinese painting is an extention of calligraphy; this 5*s!By AgogoLiveFor the Absolute Beginner with no calligraphy experience. As chinese painting is an extention of calligraphy; THIS IS FIVE STARS!If you are a beginner looking for JUST THE ONE PRACTICAL BOOK - THIS COULD BE your candidate for consideration. Includes a great section on the types of brush strokes with clear instructions illustration for an absolute beginner with no calligraphy experience. And as chinese painting is an extention of calligraphy Ive found this a tremendous resource.Gives one the confidence to be able to identify the different types of strokes and thereafter to recognise when to use them in future compositions.Comprehensive; professional with the most practical coaching instructions and helpful illustrations Ive come across to date in imparting the "proper techniques".Tutored herself by one of the Chinese masters; Alison passes on to us some of the ageless techniques and gems she has acquired and built on. Id say this is still my favourite Chinese brush painting books ... quite akin to (i agree with my co reviewer) having a coach talk you through your adventure. From a novice beginner-enthusiast; I say Thank You Alison.I also like Qu Lei Leis The Simple Art of Chinese Brush Painting.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Very Useful Approach to Chinese PaintingBy Mike WrightThe authors detailed; step-by-step approach to brushwork is clear and productive. I originally learned from this book in the early 70s; then used the techniques taught by Cameron to attempt to copy reproductions of the work of my favorite Northern Song painters. Not only does she show how to make various foundational strokes; but she gives examples of incorrect strokes and explains why they are incorrect.I gave away my ancient first copy and bought two more -- just in case I needed to give away another one. This book works nicely as a practical introduction that can help one grasp the much deeper The Way of the Brush: Painting Techniques of China and Japan; by Fritz Van Briessen; which is also available on .com.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One part autobiography; one part Chinese painting.By Rick CookThe author; the daughter of General Joseph Stilwell; grew up largely in China before WWII. At an early age she became fascinated with classical Chinese painting and studied under a master in China. The stories of her childhood experiences with learning to paint in the Chinese style; and Chinese culture in general; adds another dimension to this book on the techniques of Chinese painting. This isnt a how-to book; but anyone who is interested in learning Chinese painting will find it worthwhile.
