Tales of excess are; for some; more exciting than a close look at; say; the use of a G-flat pedal note in lsquo;Thatrsquo;s The Wayrsquo;. But for a scrupulously in-depth discussion and analysis of the bandrsquo;s music; for those readers who are interested in musicianship and how great art is created; take a look at this book.Like some of the best writing on rock music; (e.g. Ian MacDonaldrsquo;s ground-breaking Revolution in the Head) Akkermanrsquo;s book assumes some musical knowledge. This enhances the readerrsquo;s capacity to come to grips with what they have been hearing for decades; but is not necessary and lack of musical knowledge should not put you off.You will find much that you never knew before and plenty of ideas about Zeppelinrsquo;s music to ponder. While some of Akkermanrsquo;s observations are debatable; this is as it should be with scholarly work. He does not venture into the weirdness of Erik Davisrsquo;s book on Led Zeppelin IV; which; although offering some interesting insights; too often drifts into bizarre speculation. Akkerman sticks to the songs and in doing so assists and enhances listenersrsquo; understanding and appreciation of Zeppelinrsquo;s oeuvre. And here is where you will find the real Led Zeppelin; in their music; not in the myths.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great BookBy JHSThere are so many bad Zeppelin books out there that its extra-special to find one thats intelligent; well-written and; best of all; will actually leave you with a better understanding of and appreciation for Zeps music and the music that inspired it. Music is the sole focus here and the bands history is brought in only to the extent that it helps explain what youre hearing. The books digs really deep into the catalog: if youve ever wanted a breakdown of Down by the Seaside; this is your lucky day. I loved every page.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
