Description

In many ways; Fray Antonio de Guevara (1480?-1545) is the forgotten man of the Spanish Renaissance. This century has seen the publication of four of his works; Aviso de privados (Paris; 1912); Menosprecio de Corte (Madrid; 1952); Epistolas familiares (Madrid; 1950); and Una Decada de Cesares (Chapel Hill; Nmth Carolina; 1966). A good modem edition of his most important work; Libro aureo de Marco Aurelio; is available only in a scholarly French magazine (Revue Hispanique; 76 [1929]); and its enlarged version; Relox de principes; can be found in its entirety only in the major libraries of the civilized world. Yet; once this writer was the most popular author of Europe whose works were con- sidered the most widely read after the Bible; according to a frequently quoted statement of Merik Casaubon. Regardless of ones personal opinion about the merits of his books; no one will quarrel with the propo- sition that additional studies dealing with the writings of Guevara are desirable. The acceptance of Guevaras writings; in spite of their popularity; was by no means unanimous. The purpose of this book is to present a detailed history of the differing reactions to the author and to explore their back- ground and causes. We shall also note how the polemics about Guevara reflect the changing intellectual climate of the passing centuries.

0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. remakes suck--shot by shot of "Psycho" masterpieceBy Bones Kelley-McCoyIn my opinion; the ONLY remake worthits salt was Hichcocks own remake of "The Man Who Knew Too Much." I took a class studying the master and he agreed. #2 was FAR better. coming from the German silent/then talkies; Hitch KNEW tge power of the vision lack of words....his remake; "Rear Window"hellip;and even using more visions than wordy;talky "Psycho." His remake was to have Jimmy Stewart give a long diatribe but was killed in favor of tge actinghellip;much better. Todays remakes of phenomenol original greatness makes for garbage. "Disturbia" was one of the better ones w/newer abilities; it was pretty good. "Assault on Precinct 13" was slash hack. Carpenters original was thoughtful; not a massacre and truly a believable story. Come up w/new material or dont do it at all. The audience has a collective brainhellip;NOT mush gruel. This book gives EVERY reason why REMAKES should NEVER BE MADEhellip;unless a new thought and complete idea can be used. Gus Van Sants shot by shot; line by line color remake of the Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece "Psycho" was a travesty w/all the WRONG actors; a duplication boredom everyone involved in the original rolling over in their graves. Me---I simply barfed at how BAD itwas. Jst like this book. Save yourself time and money. Spend on a good thriller; romance or true story. One really cannot beat the original. And are we going to be subjected to a 4th remake of "Transformers?" Something for the allmighty dollar. Taken 3? I guess that ends. Its become a diseasse. JUST BECAUSE ONE CAN DOES NOT MEAN ONE SHOULD!!!!!!!!!!
