For me what was interesting however is not so much the plays main subject of the satire of petty officials but the other side to the play; the deeper characterization of the supposed Government Inspector the Governor and his wife. The play to me is about the hopes and dreams of petty officials who given half a chance wax eloquent about how big and important they or they dream that they are they fool others but they fool themselves; one of the tragedies of life really. Look at the hotel manager in Thorogoods Hotel Le Big Knob to get the gist of what I am saying here. Gogols play is easy to read; enjoyable and would be a romp on the stage and strangely the people in it are flawed but very likeable.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
