With this simple; but powerful observation; the feminist artist Sanja Iveković has risen over these past thirty years to stand as a role model for multiple generations of women artists. Here the prolific art historian; critic and curator Ruth Noack offers a gem of a book; assessing a single performance work by Iveković; Triangle (Trokut; 1979); the circumstances of its making; its transformation into an installation work; and its canonisation in more recent years.Much more than this; however; she beautifully contextualises the work; taking us back through Ivekovićs Zagreb in the 1970s. She quotes the critic Ana Janevski in saying; "Yugoslavia was particularly interesting as a cultural space in which parts of the communist political and cultural elite recognised correspondences between the universalism of modernist art and the universalism of socialist emancipation."A feminist analysis of power; yes; but equally a warm and engaging examination of the birth; growth and evolution of one womans singular manner of expression.Early on Noack makes an assessment of Triangle as it was seen then; that applies just as readily to her own achievement now: "...the work could serve as a vehicle of translation between past and present and East and West; at a time when many had lost the means to make sense of a globalised but fragmented world. It told a story that we wanted (and needed) to hear."
