As an L.A. native born in the late 1950s; their surf and car songs were part of the soundtrack of my childhood. The Beach Boys playlist on my iPod is hours long. I have collected bootleg "Smile" tapes and singles by The Honeys. The fact that Brian Wilson went haywire; and that Mike Love became a fat bitter old conservative; mean little to me. What matters is the music: that amazing stop-time on "I got the pink slip; Daddy"; Carls angelic tenor on "God Only Knows"; pretty much everything about "Good Vibrations"; "I Can Hear Music"; and "Sail On Sailor". So; when I describe Catch A Wave as exhaustive and at times nearly exhausting; note that I dont sort of like the Beach Boys - I am a diehard. And even for a diehard; Catch A Wave is a lot of material; covering the history of the Wilson and Love families; practically back to covered wagons; the story of the band itself (both as a music making entity and as a lawsuit machine) in painstaking detail; and Brian Wilsons personal saga; practically from the womb and almost one day to the next. It is clearly well researched and obviously a labor of great love and respect (so much so that I sometimes wondered if the author might have been just a tad too close to the subject - this story has but one hero; and an awful lot of villains). Oh; I enjoyed Catch A Wave; and I read it all; but sometimes it seemed like too much information.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Must Have for Brian Wilson Fans and a Great ReadBy GolddieWritten with intellect and compassion; this is my favorite biography on Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys as well as for much of Wilsons story. Carlin is simply a superb writer in style; pace; information; and analysis. He doesnt deliver a long litany of facts and data; but analytically reflects upon surrounding causes and ultimate conclusions that move towards the Phoenix-like aspects of Wilsons story. If you are curious about Wilsons mythologized masterpiece; SMiLE; this is a must read (along with Domenic Priores book). I rarely read a non-work-related book more than once; but this one Ive gone to a second; third; and fourth time; and its just a great go-to book for Beach Boys info overall.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Essential SourceBy Peter HillmanOutstanding biography; by a very talented writer; covering lives; sounds and spirits of Brian Wilson; family; Beach Boys; collaborators; friends; "non"-friends; professionals--from loopy control-freak psychologists to the truly talented Van Dyke Parks; so essential to "SMILE." No doubt Wilson is a genius; and Carlin doggedly reveals this genius in all its manifestations. That Brian Wilson is active today and performed in the "50 Year Beach Boy Reunion Tour" (and produced new music for same) is a testament to his remarkable resilience; which Carlin describes so well. Im glad this book exceeded my expectations; and recommend it as the first and most essential stop for any reader wanting to learn about this most brilliant; gifted and enigmatic artist so touched by fire. P.S. My wish: that Carlin updates the book to reflect the past 10 years...The 50th Reunion Tour; issue of "Smile Sessions" and other events call out for Carlins treatment.
