In his latest book; James Elkins offers a road map through the field of visual studies; describing its major concerns and its principal theoretical sources. Then; with the skill and insight that have marked his successful books on art and visuality; Elkins takes the reader down a side road where visual studies can become a more interesting place. Why look only at the same handful of theorists? Why exclude from ones field of vision non-Western art or the wealth of scientific images?

The problem I have with this book is the deceptive title...the is very little "versus" in this book. I feel that the author did this to get the hard core Disney fan to buy a book that they would not have even thought to buy; which is too bad for a book that would have been good enough to stand on its own.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Its About TimeBy Mackenzie ClarkFinally! A book about the great history of one of my favorite theme parks out there. Even though I was expecting to read more of the rivalry between Universal and Disney; the book does give the detailed story of how Universal Studios Florida and Disney MGM Studios came to be. It also talks about how many companies owned the Universal parks from MCA to Comcast. A lot of fascinating information thanks to the great work of Sam Gennaway. Definitely worth the read for any theme park fan.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Slightly Misleading Title; Great Book AnywayBy Alex D. GorgoneShould be called "How Universal Evolved to be Disneys Biggest Rival" instead of Universal vs. Disney considering 90% of the book is specifically about Universal history. Also a bit hard to follow with the huge jumps back and forth in time; but a great and fascinating collection of information nonetheless!
