Surprisingly; because one would not typically expect a historical survey of buildings to be so instantly engaging. Yet I found myself wholly absorbed in it from the very first pages. The volume is beautifully laid out; its large pages filled with fascinating photographs and reproductions of early--often amusingly quaint--brochures and promotional ads. I have lived a long; long time in Seattle myself; and I have to admit that until I read this book; I had never really noticed the hundreds of stately and remarkably ornate pre-WWII apartment buildings scattered throughout the city. Now I see them everywhere I look. This lovely publication is a genuine consciousness raiser. Enthusiastically recommended for anyone who appreciates art; architecture; history and urban life.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic History of Seattle Apartment BuildingsBy Cleo63fanThis book is a must for anyone who is familiar with Seattle; and especially for those who have lived in the city over the years. It examines a part of Seattle history that has been neglected; and Diana James has comprehensively and perfectly captured the importance of apartment living here. The fact that most of the buildings described in the book still exist is an added treat. There are many great illustrations and photographs well displayed; but the book is small enough to easily carry with you when you go see these landmarks for yourself!3 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I was thereBy Nancy Talbot DotyAlthough I never lived in a Seattle apartment; I often visited my grandparents in several of them. It was enjoyable to see my native citys history from this aspect. The book did not live up to the promises of reviews that cited what the reviewers saw as the writers "personalization" of her account. As I said; I have often been in several of the buildings featured but would not have recognized them from this book. My chief complain is that I looked; in vain; for a comprehensive map that would show the locations she mentioned. As copiously illustrated as "Shared Walls" is ; one would think that a map; or at least an overall directory of addresses could have been included.
